Telstra mobile outage disrupts services across Australia

A major outage on Telstra’s mobile network has disrupted voice and data services across Australia, affecting millions of customers, businesses, transport operators and organisations that rely on Australia’s largest telecommunications provider.

The disruption began during the early hours of Wednesday morning, with customers across multiple states reporting that their mobile devices had entered ‘SOS Only’ mode or were unable to make calls, send messages or access mobile data. The outage also affected customers of mobile virtual network operators that operate on Telstra’s network, including Boost Mobile, Belong, ALDI Mobile, Tangerine and Woolworths Mobile.

Reports of the outage quickly surged on monitoring platforms as customers experienced widespread connectivity issues from around 4:00 am. Services gradually began recovering later in the morning, although Telstra had not immediately confirmed the root cause of the incident.

The outage extended beyond consumer mobile services, impacting businesses, transport networks and payment systems.

In Victoria, V/Line suspended all regional rail services because its operational communications rely on Telstra’s 4G network for critical communications between train drivers and network control centres. Replacement coaches were introduced where possible, although authorities advised passengers to defer travel due to limited capacity. Similar disruptions were reported on regional rail services in New South Wales.

Businesses also reported interruptions to EFTPOS services. Tyro Payments advised some merchants that terminals using Telstra’s mobile network were unable to process transactions and recommended switching to Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity where available until services were restored.

Emergency services were also affected. Authorities confirmed that while Triple Zero remained available through automatic network switching where possible, some emergency communications experienced disruption. Government agencies monitored the situation closely as Telstra worked to restore normal operations.

Telstra acknowledged the issue shortly after reports emerged and issued the following statement through its official communication channels:

“Some customers are experiencing issues making mobile calls and using mobile data. If you’re having trouble connecting at first, try again as it may work on a retry. We’re on it and will share an update as soon as it’s fixed.”

At the time of publication, Telstra had not announced the underlying cause of the outage but indicated that engineers were continuing to investigate the incident.

The outage comes as Australia’s telecommunications sector faces increasing regulatory scrutiny over network reliability and customer communications during major service interruptions.

Under the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Telecommunications (Customer Communications for Outages) Industry Standard, which came into effect on 30 June 2026, telecommunications providers are required to provide timely public updates during major outages and maintain publicly accessible outage registers. The rules require regular customer communications during significant service disruptions and greater transparency regarding restoration efforts.

The incident also highlights the growing dependence of Australia’s critical infrastructure on resilient telecommunications networks. Transport systems, payment services, emergency communications and business operations increasingly rely on continuous mobile connectivity, reinforcing the importance of network redundancy, operational resilience and rapid incident response.
