Macquarie Technology Group and Macquarie University have announced a partnership aimed at supporting collaboration across research, technology and innovation, including in cyber security, cloud computing, data centre engineering and technology policy.

The agreement sets out a framework for joint research, industry engagement and knowledge exchange between the two organisations, which are both based in the Macquarie Park Innovation District in Sydney.

In a statement, Macquarie Technology Group CEO and cofounder David Tudehope said the partnership would give students “the opportunity to have hands on experience working with new data centre and cloud technologies”.

David Hirst, group executive of Macquarie Data Centres, said the organisations would “explore opportunities for students, academics and industry experts to engage with the latest thinking in data centre and cloud technologies”, and look for collaboration drawing on expertise in “complex software, networking, electrical and mechanical systems”.

Macquarie University vice-chancellor and president Professor S. Bruce Dowton said the agreement promised “a range of practical opportunities for our researchers, students and graduates”, and would bring “state-of-the-art technology to campus”.

The partnership announcement comes as industry and government continue to push for stronger university-industry linkages to address Australia’s technology skills pipeline and to build sovereign capability across critical digital infrastructure, including cyber security and cloud services.
