The University of New South Wales (UNSW) will host students from universities across Australia in the upcoming Australian Cybersecurity Games.

The competition, run by SECedu, an Australian network of educators and cyber security professionals, will take place between September 2-30, 2024.

SECedu was founded as a partnership between UNSW Sydney and Commonwealth Bank and combines the talents of Australia’s top computer science schools with the country’s largest and most respected cyber security teams to train the next generation of cyber security professionals.

The Australian Cybersecurity Games fosters collaboration, innovation, and skill development among students pursuing careers in cybersecurity. Participants will engage in various functions that simulate real-world cybersecurity scenarios, including cryptography, network security, and web vulnerabilities.

The competition aims to provide a platform for students to showcase their talents, learn from industry experts, and network with peers and professionals.

“We are thrilled to host this national competition and provide a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their cyber security skills,” said SECedu Directors and UNSW Professor Richard Buckland. “SECedu is working with leading cybersecurity employers, developing the expert workforce for tomorrow.”

“The Australian Cybersecurity Games highlights the importance of cyber security education and encourages students to push the boundaries of their knowledge and creativity,” he said. “The Games gives university students across Australia real-world challenges to help them develop practical skills and mindset to be our much-needed future frontline cybersecurity professionals.”

Students from universities across Australia, including Canberra Institute of Technology, Edith Cowan University, Griffith University, Macquarie University, Monash University, University of Melbourne, University of Tasmania, UNSW, Western Sydney University, and The University of Queensland will compete in the event.

“By participating in these cyber security competitions, students are not only securing their future careers but are also playing a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s digital assets,” said SECedu Monash Lead Professor Nigel Phair. “This initiative is a win-win, fostering individual growth and national security.”
