How to secure those gadgets you got at Christmas for 2019

With all those post-Christmas smart-gadgets and connected devices lying around, make sure you keep you and your family’s data safe in 2019. Here’s three simple steps to stay secure from ISACA’s John Pironti.

  1. Be smart about using WI-FI hotspots

Limit your use of activity on public WI-FI networks at airports, cafes and restaurants, especially when banking. Public WI-FI is much less secure than in-home or corporate WI-FI.

  1. Opt for two-factor authentication

Use the best two-factor authentication available, or an SMS text password. As a last resort, use a secret question. When using a secret question, don’t give the site your actual birthday or the name of your dog, just provide a date or name that you’ll remember to authenticate it.

  1. Be proactive about passwords

Use a password manager service to store your passwords as they’re more secure than them being written on a post-it note on your desk. Or, make your passwords stronger. The best approach to creating a password is to use a common phrase and a trigger for what the website is.

John Pironit states: “Today’s homes are loaded with connected devices. Our homes are intended to be a sanctuary, offering safety and privacy from the outside world. The massive influx of connected smart-home devices in recent years can make our homes an even more enjoyable oasis, yet the reality is the security for these devices are still in its infancy. Virtually all of us have been guilty of becoming mesmerized by a new gadget to the point where the device’s security become an afterthought, but a few smart tips can keep your data and family safe this year.”
