Deloitte Access Economics (DAE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have released a new report: Harnessing Public Cloud Opportunities in the Government Sector. You can view the full report here.

The government sector is reported to face new challenges of growth in service expectations and its costs of delivery, amid constrained resources and declining public trust. The benefits of public cloud are well recognised – the cumulative productivity benefits of public cloud to the government sector could already be over $2 billion over the last 5 years.

Additional key points from the research include:

  • Government decision makers identified the main benefits of public cloud as being:
    • Improved agility in terms of being able to better scale operations as needed, such as during times of peak demand for agency services of applications
    • Improved productivity, through time savings in analysing data or in streamlining processes
    • Improved services, reliability and data security
  • 73% of government agencies reported that insufficient knowledge, or understanding about using public cloud is holding agencies back
  • Recommendations for action include:
    • Setting a timeframe for the majority of systems to be in the public cloud by 2025
    • Government sector to prepare for public cloud by considering its existing and required skills

In the report, case studies of AWS customers are provided such as Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Taxation Office and Department of Planning and Infrastructure South Australia who have successfully transitioned to AWS Cloud.
