The Australian Tax Office says retaining records of work-related expenses is essential to making a successful refund claim and has issued a heads up to taxpayers about this as the end of the financial year nears.
The ATO says there are a couple of important things to remember. Firstly, having records of work-related expenses is a must. If there is no proof to support your claim, you can’t claim it. Secondly, a bank or credit card statement (on its own) is not enough evidence to support a work-related expense claim. In most cases, you’ll need a receipt.
Receipts must show the cost, the supplier, the transaction date, and the nature of goods/services purchased.
The ATO also warns you may need to keep other records depending on the expense type, such as a logbook of your car journeys or records of the hours you work from home.
The tax office has a claims guide on its website specifically for security workers and says that is a good starting point for further information.
