Diraq and Equinix to deploy Australia’s first quantum computer inside a data centre

Quantum computing specialist Diraq says it will deploy what it describes as Australia’s first quantum computer operating inside a commercial data centre, to be installed at an Equinix facility in Sydney.

The system, due to be installed in October 2026, is expected to be housed alongside conventional computing infrastructure already operating in the data centre. Diraq says the deployment will test how quantum computing can run in environments used for AI, cloud and other enterprise workloads, and support work towards commercial adoption.

Diraq said the system will include a silicon chip containing eight quantum bits (qubits), with cryogenic cooling and control electronics self-contained. The company said the system will fit within the existing data centre footprint, require minimal integration, and draw less than 20kW of power.

“Quantum computers are about to become as essential to data centres and computing infrastructure as data servers, CPUs and GPUs,” said Andrew Dzurak, Diraq Founder and CEO. “The data centre is where quantum computing goes mainstream, and that shift starts now. The companies said the collaboration will focus on evaluating operational performance in a live commercial environment with network connectivity, including remote monitoring and integration with classical computing resources. They also said the project is intended to inform how quantum and AI systems might be used together as both scale, and to support future discussions with industry partners and customers.

Diraq said scaling to higher qubit counts would require replacing the chip without changes to surrounding infrastructure. The company argues this approach could allow multiple systems to be deployed in standard data centres as demand grows.

Installation work at Equinix’s Sydney data centre is expected to be completed in October 2026.
