Effective cyber security strategies are under threat

Cyber security firm Proofpoint has released its latest report in collaboration with the Economist Intelligence Unit, which has found that effective cyber security strategies are being threatened as workforces move away from traditional working locations and hours.

The Economist Intelligence Unit surveyed 300 corporate executives as part of the report and found that respondents view ensuring compliance among contractors to be one of the biggest obstacles to safe cyber-security practices.

This report highlights the unique vulnerabilities of gig and contract work based organisations to cybercrime, as independent vendors continue to be heavily targeted, even with robust cyber security policies in place by their organisations.

Key findings:

  • 38 percent of cyber-attacks resulting in data breaches have been targeted at contractors and third-party vendors.
  • 48 percent of respondents understand people-centric threats to be among the top three risks faced by large organisations today including phishing scams, ransomware, malware, BEC and wire transfer fraud.
  • Respondents understand the most effective security process for ensuring responsible employee cyber-security behaviour is to conduct regular employee education and security training – a central challenge when faced with a distributed workforce.
